Appellation :
Muscadet Sèvre et Maine sur Lie, appellation d’origine contrôlée. This wine produced at the Château de Chasseloir results exclusively from the part of the vineyards located in front of the cellar of the property where the vines are one hundred years old. They would appear to be the oldest vines in the Nantes area. Each year when the harvest is gathered the grapes are vinified separately from the rest of the estate.
The wine took the name of Comte Leloup de Chasseloir “Cuvée des Ceps Centenaires” referring back to the Leloup family who owned the Château before the French revolution.
The vineyard :
The vines which are now one hundred years old were planted after the phylloxera crisis with grafted stock of the Melon de Bourgogne grape variety. Each vine is very deep rooted penetrating the rock to a depth of several metres. To guard the homogeneity of this parcel of land the vines are renewed with a layering technique
Winemaking process :
The grapes are harvested at optimum maturity and only by hand. This allows the removal of any parts of the bunch affected by botrytis. Fermentation is carried out in stainless steel vats and continues the process of settling on the lees over a period of several months. The bottling commences seven months after the harvest in May. The minerality of the soil allows the wine to age in the bottle and to continue to its full maturity after several years
Tasting :
The wine develops complex flavours whilst preserving its freshness. Many vintages that are stored in the cellars are appreciated over a decade.
